Getting Access to Downloadable Instructor Resources

Downloading files

Use TestGen testbanks to create tests with questions that correspond to your Pearson Education textbook.

Getting Access to Downloadable Instructor Resources

When you click a link to download an instructor resource identified with the   icon, you must log in to confirm your identity as a registered instructor. You establish a unique login name and password during online registration.

Unregistered instructors can get access by filling out a request and then registering online by redeeming the provided access code.

If you have registered for access to other Pearson Education online products and your existing login and password didn't work, you will need to get access for this site and reregister. Tip: To save time during this next registration, do specify your existing login name and password. Doing so will make it easier for you.

  • Your account information on record will be filled in automatically, so registration will be quicker

  • After you register, you will be able to use the same login and password for accessing multiple Pearson Education sites.

It is important that you safeguard your instructor download access from students!

For instructors who have logged in to download resources:

  • To ensure the security of instructor resources from students, never leave your computer unattended while you are logged in.

  • To cancel your logged-in state while preserving your current view of the catalog, click the "Sign out" link in the upper right of the page.

Downloading Files

Before downloading a resource or set of resources; check whether your computer has the appropriate software installed so that you will be able to view, print, decompress, or otherwise work with the downloaded files.

To download electronic files from Pearson Education Instructors' Resources:

Download time: Depends on file size and the speed of your Internet connection. Most downloads on a high-speed connection will take less than 30 seconds. Downloads over dial-up connections will take longer.

  1. Click the link next to the   icon.

  2. Identify yourself as a registered instructor by providing your login name and password. If you do not have this information yet, get access to downloadable instructor resources.

  3. Click the link : "Click to begin file download".

  4. Internet Explorer Users:Click Save.
Netscape Users: Click Save this file to disk and click OK.

  5. Identify where to download the file: If the default destination is not where you want to download the file, specify another location.

Tip for TestGen testbank downloads: It's easier to find your testbanks later if you save them to the TestGen folder on your computer. Because testbank downloads are in compressed format, you will need to expand the ZIP or SIT files after downloading.

  6. Click Save, leaving the file name as is. A window indicates when the download is complete.
Tip: You may want to rename the file later to a more meaningful name for you. If you do, make a note of the original name to be able to check whether you have downloaded this particular resource before and in case you ever need to refer to this file when contacting Product Support.

  7. Repeat the process for each file you want to download, such as chapters in a guide. (Once you are logged in, you will not be prompted to log in again in the same session.) When you have downloaded the final file, close the File Download window.

If you encounter any difficulties downloading instructor resources, you can contact Product Support by filling out an online form.

To access the downloaded file

Navigate to the location you chose to download to and double-click the resource.

  • If the file is compressed or you cannot open it for some other reason, you may need to install a viewer or other application to work with the downloaded file.

  • On some operating systems, if Netscape recognizes that the application needed for viewing this type of file is already installed on your computer (for example, Adobe Acrobat Reader to view a PDF file), the file may open automatically in the browser window once the download is complete.

  • If you cannot locate the file for some reason, begin the process to download another file while still in the same session. The default location for saving the new download should reveal where you last downloaded a file.

Applications Needed to Work with Downloaded Files

To view, print, decompress, or otherwise work with downloaded instructor resources, a particular type of viewer or application may need to be installed on your computer. Each downloadable file includes a label of its format type, such as PDF file, to the right of its link name.

  • Manuals and guides are typically .PDF or .DOC files.

  • Assessments are typically in a compressed format, such as .ZIP (Windows) or .SIT (Mac). When you expand these files for TestGen testbanks, they are in .BOK format.

  • Presentations are typically .PPT files.

Click a link below to find out the software needed for:

  • .BOK files

  • .DOC files

  • .PDF files

  • .PPT files

  • Expanding .ZIP or .SIT compressed files

If you have downloaded a file, installed the needed application(s) and still cannot open the download file, contact Product Support.

    .BOK files

You will need to install the TestGen application. Go to http://www.pearsoned.com/testgen and click the TestGen link. When prompted to log in, use the same login name and password that you use to download Instructor Resource files from this site.

If you already have TestGen installed, check its version for compatibility with downloaded testbanks to see whether you may need to upgrade by installing the latest version, as described above.

    • The version of TestGen used to create each downloadable testbank is listed beneath each Instructor Resource testbank file link.

    • To find out your installed version of TestGen: Start TestGen and select About from its help menu.

    .DOC files

If you do not have Microsoft Word, you need to download the Microsoft Word 97-2000 Viewer from the Microsoft website. This viewer version can open documents created with all previous versions of Word for Windows and version 4.x and later for Microsoft Word for Macintosh.

    .PDF files

If you do not have Adobe Acrobat, you need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader to your computer from the Adobe website.

    .PPT files

If you do not have Microsoft PowerPoint, you need to download the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2003 from the Microsoft website. This viewer version lets you view presentations created in PowerPoint 97 or later versions.

Expanding .ZIP or .SIT compressed files

Large download files are compressed for speedier downloading. To extract the native files from these compressed files you will need either WinZip (for ZIP files) or StuffIt Expander (for SIT files). You can download free evaluation versions or purchase this software from the following links:

For instructions on how to extract compressed files to their native format, click the Help that comes with WinZip or StuffIt Expander.

Once the native files have been unzipped or unstuffed, you may need another type of software to work with them. For example, compressed TestGen testbanks will yield native BOK files, which require that you have the TestGen application installed. For more information, see BOK files.

  •

    File Size Considerations

Each downloadable file includes a file size label to the right of its link name. If no file size unit is indicated, such as KB or MB, then the size is in bytes. 1024 bytes = 1 KB (kilobyte), 1024 KB = 1 MB (megabyte).

Can your system accommodate the download(s)?

If your computer is a fairly recent model, chances are that it can accommodate many instructor resource file downloads. However, if you have have reason to be concerned about the available space on your computer, you can check this.

    • Windows users: Double-click My Computer and then right-click the appropriate disk icon, likely Local Disk (C:). The amount of free and used space displays on the left side of the window.

    • Mac OS users: From the Apple menu, click About This Computer (Mac OS 9.x) or About This Mac (Mac OS X).

Compressed download files will expand to a larger size:

If you download a compressed file (such as .ZIP or .SIT), note that the expanded native file will likely be significantly larger. For example, a compressed TestGen testbank that is 3 MB can be 12 MB when unzipped/unstuffed to its native .BOK format on your computer.
